Bandhavgarh National Park was the former hunting preserve of the Maharaja of Rewa and at present is a famous natural hub for white tiger. White tiger, now a major yet rare attraction in a handful of the world’s zoological parks, were first discovered in Rewa, not far from here.

Named after its ancient fort set on 800m high cliffs, Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh state is set amidst the Vindhyan ranges. Declared a national park in 1968, it is a compact park of some 448 sq. kms. Though there are flat grassy maidans in the south of the park, the park is predominantly comprised of undulating terrain interspersed with rocky ranges, grassy swamps and forested valleys.

Claiming to have the highest density population of Bengal tiger in India; coupled with a population of elusive leopard, nilgai, jackal, hyena, wild boar, sloth bear, gaur and sambar deer, game drives are often peppered with sightings. Exotic birds such as red jungle fowl, black ibis, long-billed vultures, Malabar pied hornbill, eagles and falcons will keep keen ornithologists interested.

The crumbling ramparts of the fort (most-often closed to visitors) crown a hill in the centre of the park above the surrounding terrain. Below the fort are a number of modest temples and small caves. The park is open from November – June.
