The capital of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal is an intriguing mix of old and new, of Hindu and Muslim cultures. With two stunning lakes dividing the city and providing Bhopal with its main attraction, the city is surprisingly attractive. South of the lakes is where shiny new hotels and shopping malls compete with modern museums and restaurants whilst north of the lakes is where you'll find the old city, packed with bazaars and mosques where the majority of Bhopal's Muslims live. These mosques display the Mughal influence including Taj-ul-Masjid featuring terracotta walls, towering pink minarets and white onion-shaped domes. Other notable mosques include Jama Masjid and its gold spikes, and Moti Masjid with a marble facade.
The two lakes, known as Upper and Lower Lake are beautiful bodies of water that attract people for the water sports on offer. On Upper Lake it is possible to rent boats and enjoy the lake out on the water. In the hills surrounding the Upper Lake, an animal conservation safari park has been set up where visitors can see white tigers, bears, deer and a variety of birds.
Other worthy attractions in Bhopal include the open-air, hillside complex of Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, a tribal safari park displaying authentic dwellings and an interesting museum. There's also the marble-panelled Lakshmi Narayan Temple and a first-class archaeological museum.
