Calicut or Kozhikode as it is also known is located on the south west coast of the Arabian Sea and is situated in south Indian state of Kerala. Basking in the tranquil setting of the Arabian Sea on the west and the peaks of the Wayanad hills to the east, peaceful beaches, flourishing green countryside and historic sites, all combine to make Calicut a popular tourist destination with something for every visitor whether it be spotting dolphins frolicking in the water off Dolphin’s Point or gazing from the lighthouse at the still visible wreck that inspired its construction. Calicut is a place one can easily wile away the hours.
Despite the relaxed atmosphere Calicut is still a busy coastal town and is of great historical importance to the region of Kerala, India and the world due to the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landing here in 1498; he was the first European to reach India via the sea route around the southern cape of Africa. He landed at the Kappad Sea shore with 170 men on 3 vessels. Da Gama’s landing led to Portuguese dominance of the spice trade. Later the British, French and Dutch followed in his footsteps and came for trade to the shores of Calicut.
This ancient town still maintains the commercial traditions that started so long ago. Calicut continues to be a centre for thriving domestic and international trade. It has contributed massively to the development of the region in commerce, trade and economic development over the years. Some of its main exports are pepper, coconut, coffee, rubber, lemongrass and oil.
