Chandrapur (Tadoba)

Chandrapur (Tadoba) Tailormade Holidays

The city of Chandrapur is situated on the banks of the Erai River in the east of state of Maharashtra, in central India. It is also known as the ‘City of Black Gold’ due to the large number of coal mines present around the city.

Chandrapur was the capital of the Gond dynasty from the 12th to the 18th century until the city was later conquered by the Maratha Bhosles from Nagpur. From 1854 the city formed part of the British Central Provinces until India gained independence in 1947. Places of interest in Chandrapur include a number of temples as well as the tombs of the Gond Kings. The Jain temple of Bhadravati is popular with the local community and houses several beautiful sculptures. Devotees visit a small Ganesh temple and Hannuman temple inside the Mahakali Mandir, considered to be an icon of Chandrapur.

The Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is a pristine and unique eco-system situated in the Chandrapur district and is endowed with rich biodiversity, including tigers. Just outside of the city are a number of ancient caves that date back to the 8th century that were once used by Buddhist monks. A large number of Buddhist sculptures can be seen engraved in these caves.
