The city of Hospet is situated along the Tungabhadra River in northern Karnataka. Hospet was built in 1520 AD by one of the famous kings of Vijayangara. King Krishnadevaraya built the city in honour of his queen Nagala Devi. Hospet is most famously known as the gateway to Hampi, the ruins of a medieval city. Hampi, the World Heritage site of ancient Vijayanagara, is just 12km away.
Hospet itself is home to the unique Ananthashayana temple, located on the eastern fringe of the city. Close to Hospet is the holy town of Harihara, also situated along the Tungabhadra River. Pilgrims believe that a dip in the river of Harihara will cleanse visitors of their sins. Harihara has its own ancient temple, celebrated amongst the people of the local area.
Further down the river is the Tungabhadra Dam. Built in the 20th century, the Tungabhadra Dam was constructed to harness the power of the river. At the base of the dam is a Japanese styled garden.
