A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kaziranga National Park lies to the south of the mighty Brahmaputra River in the state of Assam.

The setting up of Kaziranga as a protected area dates back to 1905, when Mary Victoria Leiter, the wife of the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon, visited the Kaziranga area. After failing to spot a rhinoceros for which the area was renowned, she persuaded her husband to take urgent measures to protect the dwindling species. The following year, the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest was created with an area of 232 km. Over the next three years, the park area was extended and by 1916, it was converted to a game sanctuary and remained so until 1938, when hunting was abolished and visitors were permitted to enter the park. It’s famously home to the great Indian one-horned rhino, numbering around 1500, and the largest concentration on the subcontinent.

Occupying a vast valley floor against a backdrop of the Karbi Anglong Hills, Kazinranga is heavily inundated by monsoonal rains from June to September. There are many marshes, interconnecting streams and ox-bow lakes, known locally as ‘bheels’ or ‘bils’. To the south of the park lie the Mikir Hills, which rise to over 1,000 metres elevation.

The park also supports populations of elephant, deer, gaur, wild buffalo, a very elusive population of tiger and extensive birdlife.
