Located in the state of Tamil Nadu, the history of Trichy, now less simply known as Tiruchirappalli goes back to before the Christian era when it was an important Chola citadel. During the 1st millennium AD, both the Pallavas and Pandyas exerted power many times before the Cholas regained power in the 10th century. The Nayaks of Madurai built the town and its most famous landmark, the Rock Fort Temple. Later in the 18th century, the town witnessed a power struggle between the British Raj and the French as they battled for supremacy.
A lasting legacy of the ravages of war over the centuries is the Rock Fort and its temples. Built by the Nayaks of Madurai and impressively perched 83 metres high on a massive rocky outcrop; the Rock Fort Temple consists of two temples. The smooth rock was first hewn by the Pallavas who cut small cave temples in to the face of the rock, though it was the Nayaks who made use of its naturally fortified position. Sri Thayumanaswamy Temple, dedicated to Shiva is located halfway, whilst the temple at the summit is dedicated to Ganesh. Ascending 437 stone-cut steps will get you to the top.
Just north of Tiruchirappalli at Srirangam is Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, one of the most interesting and largest temples in all of India. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple complex is staggeringly large and very lively, thanks to the sheer number of pilgrims who flock to the revered site.
