On the 25th April, 1915 - British, Australian and New Zealand troops landed on Gallipoli at what is now known as ANZAC Cove. The invasion was aimed at capturing and securing the Ottoman capital of Istanbul and thus the gateway to the Black Sea and Eastern Europe. Supposedly swept upstream from their intended landing site, ANZAC troops were trapped on the steep cliffs of Ariburnu under fierce attack from Turkish Troops. After nine months of ferocious and often futile battle, the Allied forces were withdrawn in January 1916.
In nine months more than 36,000 Commonwealth servicemen died. Although the campaign failed in its military objectives the “ANZAC LEGEND” was borne, honouring the valour and heroics of the fallen ANZAC troops. Each year their legend is commemorated at a Dawn Service on the fateful Gallipoli peninsula, as well as other ceremonies around the globe.
