Spend the day exploring the Capital of the Kingdom, Amman! We will visit Roman ruins throughout the city which was known in Roman times as Philadelphia, and also a visit to the Royal Automobile Museum with its astounding collection. (OVERNIGHT AT THE LARSA HOTEL AMMAN)
This morning we visit Jerash, the world’s best-preserved Roman provincial city, built over 2,000 years ago and known as the ‘Pompeii of the East’. Here we visit the Forum, with its forest of towering columns, the arena, where the tracks of chariot wheels can still be seen, the souk area, Temple of Artemis and the South Theatre with its near-perfect acoustics. We continue on to Umm Qais , a dramatic black-basalt Roman city with panoramic views over the Sea of Galilee. Returning to Amman in the evening head out and enjoy dinner in one of the many trendy traditional style arabic restaurants. (OVERNIGHT AT THE LARSA HOTEL AMMAN)
Spend today exploring the ruins of the eastern desert. The old village of Um al-Jimal has a fascinating mix of Nabatean, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic ruins and partially remaining buildings. Next on the sightseeing is Azraq Oasis, to tour the Roman fortress, before heading to the Desert Castle of Qasr Amra, Qasr Al Qastal and Qasr Kharanah, built in the 8th century. Descending to the Dead Sea today we make a stop to visit Madaba to see the Greek Orthodox Church of St George which has incredible 6th century Byzantine mosaics, depicting Jerusalem and other holy sites. Onward and upward we visit Mt Nebo, from where it is said Moses saw the promised land. (OVERNIGHT AT THE WARWICK HOTEL DEAD SEA)
Today we drive to Petra but not without some incredible must see sites along the way. First stop, Mujib for a panoramic view of the incredible desert scenery, next port of call is Umm ar Rasas, a haunted deserted city on the ancient caravan routes. Our last stop of the day is the magnificent Shobek Crusader Castle, then arriving into Petra by evening have a rest at the hotel.
Get ready to be amazed! All but lost to the modern world until 1812, Petra is a real archaeological gem, full of ancient tombs and ruins ripe for the modern-day discoverer. We access Petra on horseback, through the mysterious mile-long Siq which leads to the spectacular façade of the Treasury (of Indiana Jones fame). This is just the beginning of a day filled with true adventure, where we’ll explore amazing sights such as the Street of Facades, the Theatre, Colonnaded Street and Qasr al Bint.
This morning we head out of Petra to explore the infamous Wadi Rum desert. Known as the “valley of the moon”, it has been described as “stupendous, timeless placed, virtually untouched by humanity and its destructive forces” by none other than Lawrence of Arabia! Concluding an hour and a half thrilling 4X4 jeep ride we arrive at our remote desert camp where you can relax and take in the stunning landscapes and then dinner under a blanket of stars.
After enjoying sunrise over the desert and a hearty traditional breakfast, we drive onward to Aqaba - Jordan’s premier Red Sea hotspot and enjoy an afternoon of R&R.
Today and tomorrow, you will have free time in Aqaba to sit back and relax enjoy the sunshine, sand and sea and of course New Years Eve, Red Sea Resort style!
Sadly your journey has drawn to its conclusion, we will transfer you to the airport back in Amman city (4 hours drive) in time for your flight home.
