Day 2: Marrakech

In the morning enjoy a guided tour of the souks and palaces of old Marrakech. Within the rose-coloured walls of the medieval medina discover a tangle of intertwining narrow passageways, colourful local shops, and the famous central square Djemaa el Fna. Towering above this extraordinary marketplace – full of colour, spicy aromas and traders – is the Koutoubia mosque, the tallest building in the city and an important religious monument. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the city at your own pace and in the evening head to the Marrakech Observatory, where you will get your first glimpse of the North African night sky through a telescope.

Day 3: Marrakech - Ait Benhaddou

Depart early in the morning and drive over the mountain passes of the High Atlas to the ancient fortified Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, stopping off at the Palace of Glaoui en route. Today travel through the verdant Draa Valley, passing by ruined kasbahs, small villages and palm plantations along the way, to the modern town of Zagora. Here visit potteries – where you can watch craftsmen at work and purchase a souvenir or two – and if time allows explore the Koranic Museum, which contains fascinating ancient copies of the Koran. Your hotel for the night is Hotel Saharan Sky which is home to Morocco’s first private observatory, boasting a rich inventory of astronomical equipment. Whether you have experience handling telescopes or are new to star gazing, staff will be at hand to guide you through the solar system. Enjoy an incredible evening of star gazing.
