Welcome to Morocco! Upon arrival at Marrakech airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the upmarket Hivernage area close to the old city centre. Spend the rest of the evening at your own leisure.
In the morning enjoy a guided tour of the souks and palaces of old Marrakech. Within the rose-coloured walls of the medieval medina discover a tangle of intertwining narrow passageways, colourful local shops, and the famous central square Djemaa el Fna. Towering above this extraordinary marketplace – full of colour, spicy aromas and traders – is the Koutoubia mosque, the tallest building in the city and an important religious monument. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the city at your own pace and in the evening head to the Marrakech Observatory, where you will get your first glimpse of the North African night sky through a telescope.
Depart early in the morning and drive over the mountain passes of the High Atlas to the ancient fortified Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, stopping off at the Palace of Glaoui en route. In the afternoon explore Ait Benhaddou – an incredible UNESCO Listed site that has served as the backdrop for many a blockbuster film, such as Laurence of Arabia and Gladiator.
Today travel through the verdant Draa Valley, passing by ruined kasbahs, small villages and palm plantations along the way, to the modern town of Zagora. Here visit potteries – where you can watch craftsmen at work and purchase a souvenir or two – and if time allows explore the Koranic Museum, which contains fascinating ancient copies of the Koran. Your hotel for the night is Hotel Saharan Sky which is home to Morocco’s first private observatory, boasting a rich inventory of astronomical equipment. Whether you have experience handling telescopes or are new to star gazing, staff will be at hand to guide you through the solar system. Enjoy an incredible evening of star gazing.
Following hotel check-out embark on a camel ride into the nearby dunes where we will spend the night in the desert. Our camp is based at the south end of the dunes giving us a better view of the night sky, where you can star gaze to your heart’s content. This camp is a wonderful place to witness incredible astrological events such as meteor showers.
This morning we leave the camp behind and enjoy another camel ride across the dunes before returning to Hotel Saharan Sky for the night.
In the morning head back through the Draa Valley to the saffron fields at the base of the High Atlas Mountains. Continue weaving up the mountain to the incredible Tizi n Test Pass, where you can visit the 12th century Tinmel Mosque – one of the few mosques in Morocco open to tourists. Later take a walk to a lake and take in the spectacular views. Spend the night in the centre of the High Atlas Mountains and the Toubkal National Park.
Today head back to the capital city passing by the Plateau du Kik – a beautiful spot surrounded by vast green fields and rocky outcrops where you can snap a photo or two. Upon arrival in Marrakech enjoy free time for some last minute sightseeing and shopping.
Today your time in Morocco comes to an end. Transfer to the airport for departure.
