Pronounced Weer-gan, the region of Ourigane is home to many small Berber villages and it is the most breathtaking part of the Atlas Mountains. Ourigane is cooler than most cities in summer and the hills and valleys are littered with dense, untouched forests, fruit orchards of lime, grapefruit and orange and roses throughout the gardens. It is a perfect base for trekking in the area and being at the base of the Atlas Mountains, has dramatic scenery. It is a tranquil area, with friendly locals and is off the beaten track, wonderful to experience.
In the area there is the Muslim sanctuary of Moulay Brahim near Asni, the Jewish sanctuary of Rabi Haim ben Diwan near Anraz and Imlil village has a clear sight of Mount Toubkal.
It is also a great place to try the traditional cuisine. Spices are all important in Moroccan cooking and the common spices used include cumin, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, paprika, aniseed, pepper, coriander, sesame seeds, saffron and mint. Couscous is also commonly used and bread is offered at every meal. A meal may start with salads, followed by a traditional Moroccan tagine. Mint tea will be served either with the meal or at the end. Seasonal fruit may complete a meal, or on special occasions a pastry stuffed with almond paste and dusted with sugar known as kaab el ghzal (gazelles horns) may be served.
