Bazaruto Island is the largest island of the Bazaruto Archipelago. It is approximately 37km long and 7km at its widest point. The island is a beautiful, unspoilt, leisure destination and is the perfect place to switch off from stressful city life. The impressive coral reefs attract a diversity of tropical fish, which abound in this sub-tropical ecosystem. The archipelago has well earned its name as the 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean'.
The whole Bazaruto Archipelago is part of a Conservation project whose primary objective is to maintain the ecological and social integrity of the Bazaruto National Park by wise and sustainable use of the resources.
On Benguerra, cashew nut trees are indigenous and grow on the seaward side of the island. The local residents harvest the nuts and the toxic husk from the nuts is used to brew a very intoxicating liquor.
Wild orange trees are plentiful as are sisal plants, which are used in a manufactured form by the locals to repair their fishing nets. Mlala palms are everywhere and the leaves are used in the weaving of mats, baskets and hats which are good souvenirs of the Bazaruto Archipelago. The sap from the palms is used to brew a potent liquor.
