20-23 December 2007 – Eid al-Adha Festival, Marrakech, Morocco
This 4-day festival is one of the most important dates in the Islamic calendar and marks the end of the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. The festival commemorates Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son to God, fortunately his life was spared and a ram slaughtered in his place. Today the same ritual takes place and the meat from the cows, rams and sheep is donated to the poor and needy.

The annual Russian Winter Festival takes places in major cities throughout Russia. The festival in Moscow’s Izmailovo Park features such stars of the Russian Calendar as Father Frost and the Snow Maiden. See famous singers and musicians perform, join in the dancing under the Christmas tree, take a sleigh ride and indulge in some traditional winter fare.

Jan to Feb 2008 – Harbin Snow and Ice Festival, Harbin, China
The City of Harbin renowned for its harsh winter comes alive in January as the freezing conditions provide the perfect climate for the annual snow and ice festival. Artists create an impressive landscape of ice blocks and snow, intricately carved to resemble, animals, plants and even famous landmarks such as the Great Wall. The sculptures are lit from within and at the end of the festival, the lanterns are smashed in the street.

Jan 2008 – Duruthu Perahera (Full Moon Poya day), Colombo, Sri Lanka
The Duruthu Perahera festival at the Kelaniya Temple in Colombo celebrates the anniversary of the Buddha’s first visit to Sri Lanka more than 2500 years ago. Three processions are staged which include the handing over of a sacred casket, elephants then carry the casket and a divine insignia, and a third procession features costumed actors, dancers and musicians.
