Russia tour reviews

Scoring an average traveller rating of 4.67 out of 5 based on 36 recent reviews — See All Russia Reviews

I had a great trip start to finish and felt completely safe in Russia. All the highlights in the itinerary were fantastic and unforgettable. The hotel in Moscow was spacious and in a very good location as too was the the hotel in St Petersburg (though a tad smaller). The location made it very easy to travel around on your own as some places were a walking distance away or a few stops on the underground so top marks.

For me, the tour was more than what I expected and this was down to our tour guide Natalya with her personalised touches and near perfect English. She was very knowledgeable, very helpful (even out of hours!) people person who went above and beyond to make this trip as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

So I thank 'On The Go Tours' for creating a great holiday and for having wonderful staff ”

Dasha was an amazing tour guide who was so nice and knowledgable about the local history and culture. As this was my first ever guided tour experience, she made it so enjoyable that I would definitely do it again. The tour itself was very well organised despite a couple of setbacks. Dasha was also very helpful whenever we had any questions and always ensured that everyone on the tour was getting the most out of their experience in Russia.”

Maria was very knowledgeable about places we went. Very easy to get along with, and open to discussing pretty much anything. Took the time to find out things we might like to do during free time, and made sure that we were given the information needed to find the places. I quite enjoyed visiting with her on the trip, and hope that others who take this tour, are as lucky as I was, to get her for a guide.

As for the tour, I personally, would have preferred spending more time in St. Petersburg, and Novgorod (countryside), than in Moscow. It almost seemed as if other than the Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral, unless you were doing optional excursions, that was all there was to do there, in relation to the tour. There seemed like so much more to see and do and explore in and around St. Petersburg, with all the churches, palaces, the various canals, and shops and the Hermitage, which was my personal highlight of the tour.”

See the best of St Petersburg & Moscow

The main draw cards of Russia are its two major cities - St Petersburg and Moscow, and as such we've included a visit to both on most of our tours. St Petersburg, the jewel in Russia’s Imperial Crown, is an enchanting city with a rich history and elegant Baroque and Rococo architecture, formed around a series of canals. And Moscow - the capital city, is home of the mighty Kremlin, legendary Red Square and fantastical St Basil’s Cathedral.

Russia Map

Recommended places to visit in Russia

Russia is huge, there's no denying that, and the number of worthy travel destinations is equally impressive from mighty cities to gorgeous countryside. To help the first-time visitor we've compiled a list of our favourite spots in Russia.

Moscow - The Mighty Capital

View on map
The Kremlin | Moscow | Russia

The capital of Russia for almost 900 years, Moscow needs little introduction. Home to the iconic Kremlin, legendary Red Square and the onion-domed St Basil’s cathedral, this huge city is without doubt the outlandish nerve centre of the Russian Federation. From the beautifully decorated Moscow Metro to the world famous museums and theatres – Moscow won’t fail to inspire.

Novgorod - An Old New Town

View on map
Novgorod | Russia

South of St Petersburg lies the interestingly named Novgorod meaning New Town which was actually founded in the 9th century! It is a pretty town of tree-lined streets, stunning white churches and a magnificent kremlin. It took a bit of a battering from the Nazis during WWII but this kremlin has been now been beautifully restored and is definitely one of the town’s highlights.

Pskov & Pechory - Rural Russia

View on map
Pechory | Russia

Just 30km from the border with Estonia, Pskov and Pechory are great places to visit to see a more rural side of Russia. Pskov boasts from an interesting fortified kremlin as well as the gilded dome roofed Trinity Cathedral; and the small settlement of Pechory has a beautiful monastery – which is great to explore on foot.

St Petersburg - Venice of the North

Church on Spilled Blood | St Petersburg | Russia

An enchanting city with a rich history and elegant architecture, formed around a series of canals, St Petersburg is the jewel in Russia’s imperial crown. With lots of fascinating museums including the world-famous Hermitage, a beautiful thoroughfare in the shape of Nevsky Prospekt and the spectacular palaces of the tsars beyond the city, St Petersburg has plenty to enthrall and entertain.

Perched on a hill

Suzdal is an intriguing blast from the past as it mingles quaint wooden cottages with glorious white churches topped with glittering, onion-shaped domes. The high quantity of places of worship scattered throughout the town make it one of Russia’s main religious centres and Suzdal is the perfect antidote to the madness of Moscow, offering visitors a glimpse into rural life and a breath of fresh air.

Yekaterinburg - Gateway to the Urals

View on map
Yekaterinburg | Russia

Most famous for the infamous murder of the Romanov family in 1918, Yekaterinburg is the first major stop in Asian Russia on the Trans Siberian Railway if travelling east and is the 4th largest city in the country. Must sees include the Church on Blood (the location of these brutal murders) and the QWERTY monument – a bizarre outdoor sculpture of the modern day keyboard.
