Moscow Madness - 4 days

FROM USD $879

Short, sharp and sweet, this city break takes in the once capital of Communism, Moscow, and its most famous sites. From Red Square and St Basil's to the Kremlin all topped off with a Russian New Year in Red Square.

Day 1: Moscow
Monday 29 December 2014. Welcome to Russia and the start of your winter holiday! Upon arrival you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel for check-in. This evening our welcome meeting will take place, where you'll meet the rest of your group and guide. Spend the remains of the evening at leisure, perhaps enjoy a few drinks in the bar and get to know your new travelling companions. Overnight - Moscow
First thing this morning we will hop on the Moscow Metro and make our way to legendary Red Square. As the historical, political and social heart of Moscow, this famous square is home to some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Within Red Square is the iconic St Basil’s Cathedral, the imposing red brick walls of the Kremlin and the glitzy Neo-Russian facade of the GUM shopping mall. Also in Red Square is Lenin's Mausoleum. If open, we can enter the mausoleum free of charge and see Lenin's embalmed body which has lain in state here since his death. This afternoon we will embark on a guided tour of the Moscow Kremlin - Russia’s bastion of power. Walking through the grounds we’ll see numerous governmental buildings, gold-domed cathedrals and the tsar bell.

During our stay in Moscow there will also be the chance go ice skating in Gorky Park with your tour leader and join one of our optional evening excursions, such as a traditional Cossack Show or a Moscow by Night coach tour. Overnight - Moscow (B)

The famous fireworks of Moscow seen every New Years Eve
Today is free for you to explore Moscow on your own. For souvenirs, Izmailova Market is the place to go. Behind its whimsically decorated walls you’ll find one of the best markets in Moscow, whether you want to pick up some tacky souvenirs, genuine fur hats or some traditional handmade crafts. Alternatively you can book our Inside a Soviet Bunker bolt-on and head 65 meters underground to explore a Stalinist-era bunker that up until recently was a top secret symbol of Soviet Power. See the giant tunnels and get a guided tour of the rooms and secret paraphernalia before a tour of some of Russia's most luxurious Stalin era metro stations.

For your New Year’s Eve celebrations tonight there’s no shortage of bars and nightclubs, otherwise head to Red Square with your guide to join the crowds - of both locals and travellers alike, to ring in the New Year. With an electric atmosphere and a spectacular firework show illuminating the distinctive turrets of St Basil’s Cathedral above the frosty square, this will be a party to remember! Overnight - Moscow (B)
Day 4: Moscow
