Welcome to Russia and the start of your holiday. Meet and greet arrival transfer from St Petersburg Pulkovo Airport to your hotel and check in. Rest of the evening is free.
Stunningly grandiose St Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great in 1703, is built around a series of bridge-connected canals and rivers. We start the day with city tour, stopping at the Church on Spilled Blood and drive along Nevsky Prospect, giving us a solid introduction of this beautiful city. Later, we then enjoy a guided visit at the treasure-filled Hermitage.
A free day to explore. Later this evening we board our overnight sleeper train bound for Moscow.
This morning, we'll ride the Metro to Red Square, from where we undertake a guided walk. In Russian, Moscow's famous Red Square is called Krasnaya Ploschad. In Red Square, feast your eyes on the wildly coloured, turban domed St Basil's Cathedral - an enduring Russian symbol. Remains of day free.
Today, in Red Square, if open, we can pay our respects to Lenin, the father of Communism, who lies in state in his eerie granite mausoleum. We tour the mighty Kremlin, walk through the grounds where we’ll see numerous government buildings, gold-domed cathedrals and the tsar bell - the largest bell that never rang! Later you can visit St Basil’s Cathedral. Afterward there is free time.
Today is yours to enjoy as you please. Since this tour runs in conjunction with other tours, today we bid farewell to those not continuing on to Yekaterinburg and to our tour leader who has escorted us thus far. Hotel check-out is at 1100hrs. However, the hotel has a luggage storage facility which you can use (nominal cost). This afternoon we join the Trans-Siberian line east.
The train continues east across the Ural Mountains. Pulling in this evening, we’re met and transferred to our hotel for dinner and relaxation.
Founded in 1723 to exploit the mineral riches of the surrounding Urals and Siberia, is Yekaterinburg. It was here in the cellar of a house, where now the beautiful Church on the Blood stands, that Tsar Nicholas Romanov II and his family were executed in 1918. We also visit Ganina Yama. After lunch, we continue to the famous Europe/Asia border marker where you can stand with a foot on either side of the boundary marker!
On Russia's far Pacific coast, Vladivostok (Lord of the East) represents the end of the original Trans-Siberian line. An attractively ...
