Day 1

Upon arrival you will be met at the airport and taken to your rental car for your onward drive to your accommodation for the next two nights. Nestled on the side of Spioenkop hill, the homely Three Trees Lodge is a beautiful traditional farm house overlooking the verdant Spioenkop Game Reserve. Here you can enjoy the rest of the day at your own leisure. Relax by the pool, indulge in a bite to eat, opt for a guided nature walk and in the evening watch the sun set over the valley below.
Overnight: Spioenkop  |  Lunch, Dinner

Day 2
Battle of Spioenkop

Spioenkop – breakfast. This morning drive to the site of the Battle of Spioenkop, one of the bloodiest battles of the Boer War. Over 300 British soldiers lost their lives, with hundreds more wounded on both sides, in this failed attempt by the British to take back the town of Ladysmith that was besieged by Boer forces. At first glance it is hard to imagine the damage and destruction that occurred here on this tranquil hillside. Today the only evidence of the battle that remains is a number of graves and monuments at a poignant memorial site on the hill summit. In the evening enjoy free time at your guest house.
Overnight: Spioenkop  |  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3
Rorke’s Drift

Spioenkop – Rorke’s Drift – breakfast. Today make your way towards the shores of the Buffalo River to the Fugitive’s Drift Game Reserve and NwaZulu-Natal Battlefields. Set within the game reserve the guest house offers fantastic views over the park grounds. Keep an eye out for zebra, giraffe or antelope from the comfort of your private veranda or the outdoor pool. Nearby you’ll find an interesting museum displaying artefacts and relics from the region, and if you are feeling adventurous you can opt for some additional excursions, like horseback riding or fishing on the Buffalo River.
Overnight: Rorke's Drift  |  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4
Isandlwana Battlefield

Rorke’s Drift – breakfast. First stop this morning is the Isandlwana Battlefield, the site of the first major battle between British and Zulu forces during the Anglo- Zulu War, which ended in an overwhelming victory for the Zulus. On the drive to the battlefield listen to an enlightening audio CD narrated by historian and tour guide David Rattray that tells the story behind the Anglo-Zulu War, entitled Day of the Dead Moon. Upon arrival you will have the chance to explore the site, a vast green landscape dotted with white stone burial markers, while learning more about this historic battle.

Later head back to Rorke’s Drift, to the site of one of Britain’s more victorious battles. Here listen to the story of when a small group of just over 100 British soldiers victoriously defended their station against over 4,500 Zulu warriors. In the evening enjoy free time at your guest house.
Overnight: Rorke's Drift  |  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Days 5-6

Rorke’s Drift – Zululand - breakfast. Departing after breakfast make your way to the Zululand Rhino Reserve, the site of your accommodation for the next two nights. Nestled in a hillside, the Leopard Mountain Lodge has stunning views over the surrounding bush and riverine forest. The next two days are completely free for you to fill as you choose, but to start you off your stay includes two daily game drives as well as a midday excursion to a hide overlooking a waterhole. Here you can enjoy a picnic lunch as you watch wildlife of all shapes and sizes come for a drink. There are also walking trails and number of offsite activities, such as boat cruises, whale watching and elephant interaction that can be booked locally at an additional cost.

You could even opt for an excursion to the historic battle sites of Fort Pearson and the Ultimatum Tree, or embark on a boat ride for a close encounter with a bottlenose dolphin, the friendly creatures that give the area its nickname, the Dolphin Coast. Alternatively relax by the pool and enjoy a drink at the honesty bar at Comfort House.
