Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park
The Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park is a massive transfrontier national park (or 'peace park'). It links Limpopo National Park in Mozambique, Kruger National Park in South Africa, Gonarezhou National Park, Manjinji Pan Sanctuary and Malipati Safari Area in Zimbabwe, as well as two areas between Kruger and Gonarezhou, namely the Sengwe communal land in Zimbabwe and the Makuleke region in South Africa. The total surface area of the transfrontier park is approximately 35,000 km2. The establishment of the Transfrontier Park is the first phase of creating a bigger transfrontier conservation area measuring a staggering 100,000 km2.
The relocation of some 1000 elephants from the overcrowded Kruger to the Limpopo National Park began in 2001, and in March 2004 a plan was executed that should increase the size of the peace park to all of 99,800 km2.
The Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park is an extensive area of essentially flat savannah bisected by the Lebombo mountain range, and drained by four river systems flowing from west to east. Temperatures are mild in winter and very rarely drop below freezing point, while summers are hot with daily temperatures averaging in the thirties (centigrade). The area is generally rather dry with a rainy season in summer, average rainfall being about 550mm per annum.
The huge peace park contains an astounding diversity of wildlife and plant species, including at least 147 mammal species, and an amazing 500 bird species, as well as woodland, scrubland, bushveld and sandy veld on the Mozambique side
