Plettenberg Bay, originally christened “Bahia Formosa” (beautiful bay) by early Portuguese explorers, offers miles of sweeping, unspoilt golden beaches, a dramatic rocky peninsula, blue lagoons and estuaries, indigenous forests and unpolluted rivers and sea. With its exceptional climate and beautiful view sites over the Indian Ocean, Plettenberg Bay is perfect for exploring, watching or just lazing.
Situated between the hills covered with indigenous Fynbos and the Bitou River is the tranquil and rural village of Wittedrift, it is a bird and nature lover’s paradise. From Keurboomstrand to the Robberg Peninsula are beaches punctuated by the river mouth and an island and it offers the best shore based whale watching of the area.
Nature’s Valley is situated 30km’s from Plettenberg Bay and the most unspoilt of all of Bitou. This little bay’s untouched indigenous trees, forest and beautiful unspoilt coastline has been preserved since the first inhabitants of early times. It is also the only town within a national park.
No less than ten important nature reserves embrace the varied ecosystems of the area as well as unique marine reserves, home to soft coral reefs, dolphins, seals and a host of other marine life. The bay itself is a nursery for the endangered Southern Right Whales, which come here to calve in the winter and spring (July to December).
