The often overlooked landlocked country of Paraguay is a land of contrasts from the dry frontier of Northern Paraguay to the subtropical rainforests. It’s both rustic and sophisticated, and is an eclectic mix of exotic natural resources, rural villages and colonial towns. The country is perhaps best known for its wild and vast Gran Chaco region where gauchos, traditional cowboys, herd their cattle on magnificent horses, dressed in traditional outfits. The capital Asuncion is a heady mix of beautiful 18th century architecture and sparkling new malls, a pleasant riverfront crammed with grand government buildings and municipal palaces, and thriving international cuisine. The city’s huge duty free zone makes it a shopper’s haven and its smart nightclubs make it an up-and-coming place to be.
