Best time to visit South America

As South America spans from the Equator to the Polar region, broadly speaking you may encounter anything from the tropical humidity of Ecuador right through to the icy conditions of Tierra Del Fuego and the Antarctic. Additionally, the climate is also affected by your altitude. If you are visiting the Ecuador and Peruvian Andes and/or the Bolivian Altiplano expect things to be chilly with bouts of rain and sun - please pack to cover all manner of conditions. The lower coastal regions of Ecuador and the Galapagos, as well as the Amazon, are more tropical in nature so will be warmer and stickier. The coastal Peruvian towns south of Lima towards Arequipa possess a dry warm climate so are more Mediterranean in feel – however clear nights can still be cold. Summer is from December to February and winter is from June to August.

Peru Climate

Peru can be divided into three main climatic regions. The tropical Amazon is hot, humid and wet all year with the driest months of June to September meaning fewer mosquitoes, lower water levels and more easily spotted wildlife along the rivers. Short heavy rains occur between November and March. The arid coastal desert is at its hottest between December and March with occasional showers and coastal fog covering the beaches and cities from April to November. The northern coastline is generally sunny year-round. The central Andean mountains and highlands experience cold temperatures due to their altitude. April to October is the dry season with hot, dry days and cold nights. The wet season from November to April brings milder temperatures and rain.

Ecuador Climate

Ecuador has a variety of climatic regions with only two real seasons. The tropical climate of the Amazon means rain year-round with the months between August and March the driest time to visit. The Pacific coastline’s best beach weather falls between January and May with sunny days and afternoon showers. Weather during the dry season (June to December) brings cooler temperatures and cloud cover. Dry season in the highlands falls between June and September with milder temperatures. April is generally the wettest month. The Galapagos archipelago is hot and arid with sea breezes often bringing a welcome respite. The winds and sea can be rough between June and September with cooler temperatures. The hottest and wettest months are from January to March though periodic light rain is common year-round.

Argentina Climate

Argentina’s climate varies widely. Buenos Aires enjoys mild winters (May to September) and hot summers (November to March) with the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn pleasantly warm. Iguazu Falls can be visited year-round with hot and humid summer months and high water levels, and cooler winter months with lower water levels. November to March is the best time to visit the mountainous Lake District with April to June bringing the heaviest rainfall. Summer is the best time to visit Paragonia with warm temperatures and more services available. Winter (May to September) is extremely cold and much of the infrastructure closes. Spring (September to November) and autumn (March and April) are a great time to visit when the land comes alive with colourful flowers. Northwestern Argentina can be very hot in the summer whilst the winter months are pleasantly warm and generally dry.

Chile Climate

High season in Chile is between the summer months of December to March. It’s the best time to visit Patagonia with warmer temperatures perfect for outdoor adventure. Spring (October and November) and autumn (April and May) can be just as good though it’s best to avoid the winter months of June to September when services shut down and passes become impenetrable. This is, however, the best time for snow-based activities in the Lake District. The Atacama Desert basks in sunny weather and high temperatures all year round though night time temperatures can plummet at higher altitudes. The summer months can be extremely hot. Thanks to sea breezes Chile’s coast generally feels cooler than the inland with the rainy season between May and August bringing cooler temperatures and wetter conditions.
