Bienviendos a Peru! Welcome to Peru and the start of your journey through the land of the Incas. Upon arrival into Lima International Airport you will be met by one of our representatives and transferred to your hotel. The night of the 1st December has been booked so that you can check straight in to your room. After check in spend some time with our rep discussing your up-coming trip. For centuries Lima was considered the most beautiful city in Spanish America and today discover why with a morning sightseeing tour (shared basis). Our first stop is the Plaza Mayor in the heart of the old town. Here you'll find the opulent facade of the Palacio de Gobierno, or Presidential Palace, where each day the ceremonial changing of the guard takes place. After we continue to the austere Catedral and various small palaces and balconied edifices that helped Lima claim UNESCO World Heritage status. Discover contemporary Lima in the form of the plush suburb of San Isidro and lively Miraflores before continuing to the quiet district of Pueblo Libre to see the stylish hacienda museum. After breakfast transfer to the airport for your flight to Cusco (FLIGHT NOT INCLUDED), known to the Incas as the ‘navel of the world’. After your arrival transfer and time to acclimatise head out to explore the Plaza de Armas, the Catedral and the Koricancha complex (touring on shared basis) – a supreme example of Inca stonework. Continue further afield to tour the Kenko Amphitheatre, the fortified hunting lodge of Puca Pucara, the stunning imperial baths of Tambo Machay and the megalithic fortress of Sacsayhuaman. Nightlife is famous in Cusco why not head out to enjoy it in your own time this evening. Overnight at the Costa del Sol Picoaga Hotel.
Making our way out of Cusco we enter the sacred valley region. On our way to the ancient village of Urubamba our first stop is to visit Awanacancha, an Andean textile centre where the art of Incan textile is kept alive. Continue to the archaeological complex of Pisac, formed of a collection of remains of Incan dwellings, temples and terracing. Enjoy a spot of shopping and practise your bartering skills at the local market before stopping for lunch. The day of touring (shared basis) concludes with a visit to the impressive fortress and citadel of Ollantaytambo. Overnight at the Casa Andina Private Collection Valle Sagrado.
Today explore the Sacred Valley further with visits to Andean villages south of the Río Urubamba. See the lovely paintings in the attractive colonial church of Chinchero. Continue to Maras where the original Indian aristocratic coats of arms hang on the outside of the church and houses. We then stop to see Moray, a circular system believed to have been used for agricultural experimentation during the Inca period. After lunch off to the train station for a stunning train journey to the famous Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Sit back and enjoy the views as the landscape changes from the Andean highlands to the beginnings of the jungle. Arrive Aguas Calientes and check in to hotel. No place in Peru quite captures the imagination like the legendary ‘Lost City’ of Machu Picchu. Nestled in a saddle between two forested mountains and surrounded on three sides by the Urubamba River, its location couldn't be more awe-inspiring. The city itself is brilliantly preserved, a classical Inca-style complex of polished dry-stone walls and temples. This morning explore the citadel (shared tour) and the wonderful Temple of the Sun and magical Temple of the Moon on a three hour guided excursion. Other highlights include the fascinating Sacred Plaza and the elaborately carved Intihuatana rock. Lunch is provided at a local hotel before you return by train to Cusco. After a leisurely breakfast at your hotel you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Lima (FLIGHT NOT INCLUDED). On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Later this afternoon visit Barranco Bohemian district. Barranco is a pleasant suburb of Lima that has kept its character much better than most of the city, and is the bohemian heart of the city. Continue with the visit of Pedro de Osma Museum. The privately-run Museo de Arte Virreynal Pedro de Osma has an exquisite collection of colonial art and furniture, as well as metalwork and sculpture from all over Peru. Feel part of the old aristocracy of Lima on a morning tour through the Colonial part of the city. Begin with the "Casa de Aliaga", the oldest Colonial mansion in Lima, owned and lived in by the Aliaga family and their descendants since Francisco Pizarro granted the land to Jerónimo de Aliaga in 1535. Continue with the Lima Art Museum with 3000 years of Peruvian art and a large selection of pre-Columbian textiles and ceramics, pictures and furniture from Colonial and Republican times and a significant selection of paintings and photographic works from modern times. Finally we visit The Church and Convent of Santo Domingo, located in the Historic Center. Overnight at the Four Points Miraflores Hotel.
