The cosmopolitan capital of Buenos Aires is one of South America’s most seductive cities. Almost European in design with tree-lined streets, lively plazas and innumerable parks and gardens where colourful parrots roost, the city claims an unbelievable array of restaurants, bars, cafes and nightclubs with its interest in the arts evident in the myriad theatres, cinemas and galleries. Amongst the glamorous neighbourhoods you’ll find traditional Buenos Aires in the old-world watering holes and fine colonial architecture. With several barrios distinct in character, it’s a city that lends itself beautifully to aimless wandering. San Telmo is the most traditional of all with crumbling facades and cobbled streets, popular on a Sunday when the antiques market comes vividly to life.
In any such charismatically eclectic city it’s hard to whittle down a list of highlights but the remarkable La Recoleta Cemetery surely must feature. Giant vaults, grandiose tombs and marble sarcophagi line the avenues of the necropolis where many famous Argentineans rest, most notably Evita. Further architectural wonder can be found in the Teatro Colón boasting a French Renaissance exterior and sumptuous interior where opera, ballet and classical music are all performed.
No visit to Buenos Aires would be complete without experiencing tango – an emotion that is danced. Enjoy dinner whilst watching professional dancers put on an intricately choreographed display at an espectáculos held throughout town or for something less touristy, seek out a milonga, a more social event held in venues ranging from a local sports hall to an elegant, traditional salon.
