Enjoying a spectacularly scenic location between the brilliant cobalt blue Lago Villarrica and the perfectly shaped peak of Volcán Villarrica, the city of Pucón has become one of the Chilean Lake District's great tourist destinations. The choice of outdoor pursuits is staggering and has helped make Pucón the adventure sports capital of the country, attracting travellers from all over the world looking for a slice of the action.
Pucón makes excellent use of its natural bounty with two national parks - Parque Nacional Villarrica with the smouldering volcano of Villarrica as its centrepiece, as well as Parque Nacional Huerquehue comprising of 12,500 hectares of pristine native forest, pretty alpine lakes and powerful waterfalls. Many visitors come to Parque Nacional Villarrica to scale the heights of the volcano for a look into its steamy crater and then hike back down the way they came or opt to madly body-slide down. For those with more time on their hands, the park contains a further two volcanoes with volcanic caves to explore and pine forests to hike through.
Picture-perfect Pucón is the best place to organise activities on the lake or in the national parks. Ride horses in the national parks, raft the Río Trancura rapids, enjoy fly-fishing and kayaking, takes a bird's eye view of the scenery with a tandem paraglide ride or parachute jump or for a more sedate affair, relax in one of the many thermal spas in the area. The town even has a couple of sandy beaches with a marina and jet skis available for hire. In winter the focus shifts to snow-based activities including skiing and snowboarding.
