Welcome to Bolivia. Arriving into Santa Cruz shortly after midnight, you will see our local driver on hand to transfer you to your hotel.
Today we enjoy a full day exploration of Amboró National Park, which is an ecological masterpiece of almost half a million hectares, located approximately 150 km north west of the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Park Amboro lies in a unique geographical position at the confluence of 3 distinct ecosystems: the Amazon basin, the northern Chaco and the Andes (nowhere else in the world do three such vast environments converge). Amboró National Park contains over 800 bird species, more than the USA and Canada together!
This morning we catch a short flight to Sucre to avoid a 12 hour bus journey! Arriving into Sucre, our driver awaits to drive you to the city of Potosi. Enjoy a guided tour of colonial Potosi dating from the days when this city, the highest in the world, was larger than either London or Paris. A gorgeous example of native artwork with many pretty churches and temples including the church of San Lorenzo. Also visit the National Mint of Bolivia.
Today we head to the miner’s market “Calvario”, where you will be able to buy coca leaves, cigarettes, dynamite which can be given to the miners. You’ll continue to the silver mines where you can visit the private, cooperative mines and be able to watch, the sacrificed work of the miners and if interested, set up a charge. spend the afternoon at leisure exploring the lovely colonial streets of Potosi.
This morning we drive to the town of Uyuni, situated on the edge of the salt flats. Here, our driver will take you round the shops to collect some supplies before taking you to your hotel on the Salt Flat aptly names Palacio de Sal.
Today is spent driving on the Salt Flats. Visit Inca Huasi (Fish Island) to see the giant cacti and have great views of the salt flats all around. There will be plenty of time for taking amazing photos before we head toward the Tayka Hotel de Piedra, located at San Pedro de Quemez. Dinner is included.
After breakfast we leave to travel further south. We will pass through the Chiguana desert area where the scenery will include a number of extinct volcanoes plus the semi active Volcan Ollague. As the journey continues we will pass by high altitude lagoons that are home to 3 species of flamingo before arriving into the desert of Siloli and the “tree of rock”. Our final destination for the day is “Laguna Colorado”, an amazing red coloured lake. Packed Lunch box on route included. Dinner and overnight at Tayka del Desierto Ojo de Perdiz.
Today we have an early start at 5am to visit “Sol de Mañana” geysers and see the bubbling mud pools and steam jets. We will then continue to some hot springs where you will have a chance to relax in the warm water pools and we will also breakfast here. After our relaxing break we continues via the “Dali desert” to see “Laguna Verde” where, if conditions are correct, we see the green mineral waters of this lake at the foot of Volcan Licancabur We then start the journey into Chile and onto San Pedro De Atacama , arriving in the evening.
Enjoy a relaxing morning to recover after the journey here. Later, a scheduled afternoon city tour with a visit to the outstanding Museo Arqueológico Gustavo Le Paige. Housing more than 380,000 artefacts including Neolithic tools, ceramics and gold and silver ritual masks, the museum is famed for its prehistoric mummies, notably the withered ‘Miss Chile’.
It’s an early morning departure today as you travel to the Geysers del Tatio for a picnic-style breakfast and a stroll around the geothermal fields to see the geysers and pools of boiling water and mud. Enjoy a rejuvenating soak in the hot springs before heading back to San Pedro de Atacama. Later in the afternoon head to the dramatic wind-eroded landscape of Valle de la Luna. The angular geology is often compared to the surface of the moon and you’ll get the opportunity to visit salt caverns and climb the sand dunes to marvel at the kaleidoscope of colours that appear over the Andes at sunset.
After breakfast visit the 12th century pre-Inca fortress of Pukara de Quitor. Strategically located on a hill, the defensive walls encircle a group of stone buildings that have been partially restored. Continue to the ancient settlement of Tulor where circular dwellings are interconnected by common passages and patios. Later in the afternoon see the impressive Licancabur volcano on your way to the village Toconao where the volcanic Liparita stone is quarried nearby. Heading in to the centre of the Salar de Atacama, the largest salt lake in Chile, arrive at the Chaxa Lagoon where you’ll find pink flamingos congregating.
This morning we head off to Calama Airport and assist you catching the flight to Santiago. Arriving here, a driver awaits to bring you to your hotel.
This morning join a scheduled tour of the city to discover Santiago’s appealing blend of the old and new. Walking to the Plaza de Armas gaze at the handsome colonial architecture including the grandiose Catedral Metropolitana, the Post Office and the Santiago City Hall. Continue to the Government Palace and the older neighbourhood of Plaza Concha y Toro marked by cobblestone streets and elegant 20th century mansions.
