Thailand

With palm-fringed beaches, gleaming temples, friendly hill tribes, intoxicating cities and delicious cuisine it is no wonder why Thailand has earned itself the nickname ‘The Land of Smiles’. Straddling the Chao Phraya River, Thailand’s bustling capital city of Bangkok is both chaotic and captivating, with ramshackle stilted houses and ancient temples juxtaposed with shimmering skyscrapers and scenes of modern day life.

Travelling north of the capital travellers will find the impressive and well preserved historical park of Old Sukhothai, the erstwhile capital of Thailand and the heart of its ancient arts, culture and trade. Still further north is Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second city, home to an impressive collection of wats and temples, while still maintaining a young vibe due to its student population; and Chiang Rai, an ancient town set in Thailand’s northern highlands, and a wonderful setting for trekking. Laos

Laos is still one of Asia’s most beautiful secrets. Take a glimpse of life from a simpler time, as hill-tribes retain their age-old customs and devout Buddhist monks collect daily alms. Even Laos’ capital Vientiane preserves a laid back riverfront style of life, retaining the charm and buzz of a provincial town with the added attraction of tranquil spaces like Buddha Park and Wat Si Saket . World Heritage listed French colonial town Luang Prabang’s tranquil atmosphere, charming villas and gilded temples make it an essential part of any journey here.

For more archaeological wonders, visit the Plain of Jars outside of Phonsavan, a remarkable site where thousands of puzzling stone jars, thought to be associated with prehistoric burial ceremonies, dot the grassy plains. In the south of the country, the quiet rural villages of Pakse and the riverine island of Don Khong are the perfect places from which to explore the 4,000 Islands region on the Mekong Delta. Burma

Burma, also known as Myanmar has retained elements of culture and tradition in a way that many of its Asian neighbours haven’t done. With vibrant festivals and markets, exquisite temples, diverse landscapes and friendly local people, Burma retains the aura of a bygone era. Deep-rooted Buddhism is evident in Burma, with beautiful temples and ornate pagodas dotting the countryside, and especially in the local’s laid-back way of life.

The major attraction of any trip to Burma has to be Bagan, a dusty plain filled with stupa upon stupa, their exotic shapes decorating the horizon. Yangon, AKA Rangoon, the former capital, is a dynamic city retaining much of its colonial character and has the added bonus of the gleaming Shwedagon Pagoda which attracts streams of devotees with offerings. Don’t miss the magnificent palace of Mandalay, or heavenly Inle Lake and its friendly people – bound leave a lasting impression even on the most seasoned travellers. Whether you decide to explore Sarawak in the south or Sabah in the North, both of these states possess an eclectic heritage and varied history, telling a fascinating story set against an impressive backdrop of dense, untamed jungle.

Borneo’s many national parks are a brilliant way to explore the region’s biodiversity. Regardless of size, from the expansive Kinabalu in Sabah to the tiny Bako near Kuching, the parks are thriving with unique wildlife and diverse plant species. Offshore are the teeming turquoise waters and pristine white beaches of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, and the main attraction in Borneo is, without a doubt, the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centres in Sepilok and Semmenggon, home to orphaned and captive orangutans.
