The timeless appeal of Laos can be found throughout the country from the tranquil French colonial town of Luang Prabang to the unassuming capital, Vientiene, which holds the allure of a provincial town, while the Plain of Jars outside of Phonsavan is a remarkable archaeological site where thousands of puzzling stone jars dot the grassy plains. In the south, the lethargic rural villages of Pakse and the riverine island of Don Khong are the perfect places from which to explore the 4000 Islands region of the Mekong.
