This morning travel to Giritale – En route visit the Dambulla Cave Temple - Climb up to the temple, Sri Lanka’s most impressive cave temples. These five caves have over 2000 sq. meters of painted walls and ceilings. These caves contain over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is the colossal figure of the Buddha carved out of rock spanning 14 meters. Afterwards continue to Giritale. This enjoy a sightseeing tour of Polonnaruwa - Visit the ruins of the Royal Palace, the Gal Viharaya – where there are 4 splendid statues of the Buddha in traditional postures carved out of rock, along with many other interesting buildings. Also visit the remains of a former Temple of the Tooth Relic. Overnight Giritale.
Travelling to Sigiriya en route climb the Sigiriya rock fortress. The ‘Lion Rock’ is a citadel of rising 200 meters from the jungle. The rock was the stronghold of the 70 hectare fortified town. A moat, rampart, and extensive gardens including the water gardens ring the base of the rock. Visit the frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens’, which are in a sheltered pocket of the rock approached by a spiral stairway. These frescoes are painted in earth pigments on plaster. Afterwards visit a spice garden in Matale, to see the different spices, which Sri Lanka is famous for. Later continue to Kandy with an evening visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic and cultural show featuring traditional Sri Lankan dancing. Overnight Kandy.
This morning visit the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawela - This orphanage is the home for about 89 elephants, which some are babies found abandoned or orphaned in the wild. The best time to visit is during the feeding times. Also could accompany the elephants to a river close-by and see them having their daily bath. Return to Kandy, for a city sightseeing tour, the name Kandy conjures visions of splendor and magnificence. Many of the legends, traditions and folklore are still lovingly kept alive. Visit the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Afterwards drive around the Kandy Lake. Visit the Kandy town and Bazaar, the arts & crafts centre and a gem museum and a lapidary. Overnight Kandy.
Leave for Nuwara Eliya - En route visit a tea plantation and a tea factory, where the best tea in the world is produced. You will be told all about the process of manufacturing tea. You can also see how tea is graded. Taste a cup of pure Ceylon tea in the factory. On completion, proceed to Nuwara Eliya, because of its invigorating mountain climate and scenery, is Sri Lanka’s most popular hill resort. Nuwara Eliya is also the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country producing a significant share of the world’s best tea. Sri Lanka’s highest mountain Pidurutalagala is located here. This evening enjoy a sightseeing tour of Nuwara Eliya – Drive through "Little England”. Overnight Nuwara Eliya.
Today you will travel to Embilipitiya – This evening enjoy a Jeep Safari to visit the Uda-Walawe National Park - With the land only recently reverting back from cultivation, the park has some fascinating characteristics that make it worth a visit. With the open plains, abandoned teak plantations and dense scrub jungle, the variety in habitat makes for a rich variety of wildlife. As well as elephants, leopards live in the park, toque monkeys, spotted deer, wild pig. Uda Walawe is particularly rich in raptor species, among them the white bellied sea eagle and the crested serpent eagle. The Elephant Transit Home is also at Uda Walawe. This is a home for baby elephants separated from their herds. Overnight Uda-Walawe.
Leave for Colombo via Ratnapura - The gem-mining centre of Sri Lanka is also a major crossroad between southern plains and the hill country to the east. A bustling market city servicing most of the surrounding towns, many of the prominent gem dealers in Sri Lanka operate from this town. Scenery around the town is excellent and charming. Afterwards enjoy sightseeing tour of Colombo - Drive through the Commercial area of the “Fort”. Drive passed “Pettah” – a noisy Oriental bazaar with, bargains, mosques & temples. Visit Hindu temple & drive pass Jumi-UL Alfar Jumma Mosque. Continue through the Wolvendaal Dutch Church, to the residential area of Cinnamon Gardens and on to the Independence Square.
