Galle Travel

Situated in the southwest of Sri Lanka, right on the coast, the city of Galle is the go to destination for many travellers on this marvellous island. With its beautiful collection of Dutch colonial buildings and rocky coastline, Galle exudes charm and sophistication as well as a unique cultural identity, shaped by centuries of different influences. The main fort area is the centrepiece of this city and has a number of quaint boutiques and cafes lining the beautiful, palm-fringed streets.

The Galle Fort part of the city is arguably one of the best examples of a fortified city in southern Asia and is home to the largest remaining fortress (built by Europeans) in Asia. The city’s National Maritime Museum is another one of it’s highlights and is home to one of Sri Lanka’s best collections of maritime artifacts. Visitors can also explore the important St Mary’s Cathedral and the delightful 5 star luxury hotel Amangalla (formerly New Oriental Hotel).

Just outside the fort you will find the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Recently rebuilt and standing with the Indian Ocean lapping at both sides, this popular sports stadium is home to the local Galle Cricket Club. Galle also hosts a literary festival every year, which sees some big names from all over the world as well as a horde of bookworms who have gathered to partake in the festivities. A typical programme includes anything from lectures and debates to cookery classes to movies.
