Day 2: Colombo - Habarana

After breakfast we leave for Habarana where you will check in to your hotel. Later this evening enjoy a visit to the Minneriya National Park to witness an elephant gathering. The national park was formed around the Minneriya Tank, built by King Parakramabahu at the height of Polonnaruwa’s glory as the capital of Sri Lanka. It serves as an important gathering place for Sri Lanka’s large population of elephants.

Day 3: Habarana

Today enjoy a guided visit to Anuradhapura, the first capital and undoubtedly the grandest city of ancient Sri Lanka. Here you'll see Sri Maha Bodhi (Sacred Bo-Tree), under which prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment. It is over 2,200 years old and the oldest historically documented tree in the world. At Brazen Palace the 1600 stone columns are all that is left of a magnificent multi-storied residence for monks. You'll also see Ruwanweliseya Dagoba, the Samadhi' Buddha statue, Isurumuniya rock temple and the twin ponds of Kuttam Pokuna. We'll also visit Mihintale where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka. On this rock are many shrines and dwellings originally used by monks, and splendid views of the surrounding countryside.

Day 4: Habarana

We head to Polonnaruwa to see the ruins of the Royal Palace, the Gal Viharaya where four splendid statues of the Buddha in ‘Upright’, ‘Sedentary’ and ‘Recumbent’ postures are carved out of rock, the Audience Hall, the Lotus Bath, King Parakramabahu’s statue, and the Parakrama Samudraya lake. Late afternoon we climb the Sigiriya Rock fortress, a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200 meters from the scrub jungle. Visit the world-renowned frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens’ of Sigiriya.

After breakfast at the hotel we leave for Kandy. En-route visit the Golden cave Temples of Dambulla, a World Heritage site and the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s cave temples. These caves contain over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is the colossal figure of the Buddha carved out of rock spanning 14 meters. Continuing we visit a spice garden in Matale to see the different spices that Sri Lanka is famous for. You will be introduced to different spices and shown how some of these spices are grown and processed. Continue to Kandy for overnight.

Day 8: Kandy

This morning visit the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala, home to some 89 elephants, including baby elephants found abandoned or orphaned in the wild. The best time to visit is during the feeding times, when one will have the opportunity of seeing the baby elephants being bottle-fed. Its invigorating mountain climate and scenery makes it Sri Lanka’s most popular hill resort. Nuwara Eliya is also the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country, producing a significant share of the world’s best tea. Sri Lanka’s highest mountain Pidurutalagala (8282 feet) is also located here. Nuwara-Eliya also has one of the finest 18 hole golf courses in South Asia.
