Koggala Travel

Koggala is a small, unprepossessing town that is home to one of the finest bay beaches in the world – Unawatuna Bay Beach, a popular place for surfers. In 1996, a small turtle hatchery was opened. In order to discourage poaching they now buy the turtle eggs from local fishermen. Visitors can witness how newborn turtles are cared for before they are released back into the ocean. This is a unique experience and is perfect for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts seeking to learn more about these magnificent creatures.

The attractive and tranquil Koggala Lake is also a haven for animal lovers as it is alive with birdlife. Dotted with rocky islands and fringed with mangroves, it is possible to visit the small islands in the lagoon and spy on some stunning exotic birds. One island features a cinnamon plantation whilst another is home to a Buddhist temple. Boat tours often take visitors around the islands enabling them to stop off at various sites of interest and to see all of the beautiful natural scenery.

Koggala also accommodates a museum that showcases Sri Lanka’s traditional culture and way of life. Artefacts include fishing tools, cooking utensils, religious items and local costumes. 5km away is the temple of Kataluva Purvarama Maha Viharaya, renowned for its remarkable Kandyan-style paintings in the main shrine, dating from the late nineteenth century.
