Wadduwa is a small tropical paradise located in the southwest of Sri Lanka. It is a perfect beach destination being only 35 kilometres from Colombo, an thus easily accessible, and boasts a long, golden sandy beach with crystal clear water. The beach itself is fringed with palm trees and makes a fantastic platform for unwinding in the sun watching the fishermen bringing in the day's catch. With its wealth of natural beauty, it isn't hard to see why Wadduwa is considered one of Sri Lanka's best coastal resorts.
Swimming, snorkelling and diving are all popular activities here as there is a plethora of gorgeous marine life to be discovered beneath the warm waves. However, if you want to do something more local then try and catch a local wedding ceremony. Hundreds of people get married here each year and it is a wonderfully colourful spectacle not to be missed. Another interesting feature of Wadduwa is the custom of using coconut fibre to make many different products such as brooms and carpets.
There are a couple of bars and restaurants as well as stores selling Sri Lankan handicrafts and jewellery. The village itself has all the charm of a traditional village with a distinctly laid-back atmosphere. There are very few amenities available at the village as daytime and evening activities are organised at the beach hotels and resorts themselves. The train ride along the coast from Wadduwa to the south is well worth doing. It takes you on a pleasant picturesque journey along palm fringed beaches and local villages.
