Waikkal is a scenic coastal town situated on the west coast of Sri Lanka. Located just north of Negombo and Colombo and being quiet and less touristy that some other Sri Lankan beach destinations, it is the perfect place for a relaxing beach break. Waikkal is famed for its pristine untouched beaches and its exotic flora and fauna. Waikkal is home to the famous Nypa Fruiticans, the only type of palm tree to grow along riverbanks. Birds and butterflies also thrive here with over 90 types of bird and over 50 types of butterfly to spot.
One of the best ways to see the wonderful nature that makes up the landscape of Waikkal is to take a boat safari along the Dutch canal. Kingfishers, waders and kites are regularly spotted, making these watery trails a veritable paradise for birdwatchers. Watersports like snorkelling and diving are also popular and readily available. You can also jump in a kayak and explore the delights of nearby river if the fancy takes you.
Waikkal is home to two large Catholic churches and five smaller ones. With the population being 99% Roman Catholic it is easy to see why. There are also a collection of other places of worship in the surrounding area including both Hindu and Buddhist temples and a mosque. If you find yourself here on a Sunday then it is well worth popping over to the neighbouring town of Kochikade for their Sunday market. The atmosphere is great and you’ll get to experience a snippet of local culture.
