Today you will be collected from the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel and transferred to Habarana where the rest of the afternoon will be at your leisure.
Today we visit Polonnaruwa-where you can see the ruins of the Royal Palace, the Gal Viharaya – where 4 splendid statues of the Buddha in ‘Upright’, ‘Sedentary’ and ‘Recumbent’ postures carved out of rock, the Audience Hall, the Lotus Bath, king Parakramabahu’s statue, and the Parakrama Samudraya lake. There are also monuments of famous places of worship such as the Shiva Temple, the Lankathilake, the Watadage, the Galpotha, the Kiri Vehera and the remains of a former Temple of the Tooth Relic. We proceed to Sigiriya and climb the 5th century Sigiriya rock fortress, built by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD). The ‘Lion Rock’ is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200 meters from the scrub jungle. We also visit the frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens’ of Sigiriya.
This morning we leave for Kandy visiting the Dambulla Rock Temple en route. Dambulla is the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s cave temples with over 2000 sq. meters of painted walls. The ceiling is the largest area of paintings found in the world. You will also visit a spice garden in Matale.On arrival in Kandy we check into our hotel before an afternoon visit the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, built by a Sinhala king and expanded by the British to the full 147 acres it is today. We then take a city tour of Kandy-before we travel around the Kandy Lake and visit the town and Bazaar, the arts & crafts centre, a gem museum and a lapidary. This evening we visit Temple of the Tooth Relic and enjoy traditional Sri Lankan dancing.
Today we visit an elephant orphanage in Pinnawala. Home for about 89 elephants who are cared, fed and trained by the wild life authorities. The best time to visit is during the feeding times, when the baby elephants being bottle-fed or at bath time in a river close by. We then visit a tea plantation and factory, where the best tea in the world is produced and enjoy a cup of pure Ceylon tea before we continue to Nuwara Eliya. Due to its invigorating mountain climate and scenery, it is Sri Lanka’s most popular hill resort. Sri Lanka’s highest mountain Pidurutalagala (8282 feet) is located here. We check in at our hotel before an evening tour of Nuwara Eliya where we drive through "Little England”.
Today we travel to Yala via Elle and Wellawaya. On arrival in Yala we check into out hotel and take an afternoon visit to Yala National Park on a jeep game drive. The park has 44 species of mammals and 215 species of birds. The park has one of the highest concentrations in the world and around 350 Asian elephants. Also present are sloth bears, golden palm civets, Sri Lankan krait and crocodiles. The coastline around the park is visited by leatherback and loggerhead sea turtles. Yala National Park has a variety of ecosystems including moist monsoon forests, dry monsoon forests, semi deciduous forests, thorn forests, grasslands, fresh water and marine wetlands, and sandy beaches.
This morning we leave to Bentota, witnessing the Stilt Fishing at Weligama along the way. We also travel by Galle to view the impressive Galle Dutch Fortress. On arrival in Bentota the rest of the evening is yours free to explore.
Bentota is famous for it’s pristine beaches and earned a notable position in the Forbes Best Beaches in Asia Awards in 2010. This is even more impressive considering this was one of the beaches damaged by the 2004 tsunami. The area offers a whole host of watersports including water skiing, snorkelling, scuba diving, parasailing, fishing and surfing. So visitors will have loads to keep themselves occupied whilst visiting. Bentota is also famed for the famous jeweller Aida, the production of a Toddy (a coconut nectar based alcoholic beverage) and the world famous ancient art of healing called Ayurveda. Today and the next two days are yours free to relax and explore at your own leisure.
Today our arrangements in Sri Lanka end with a departure transfer to the airport and many amazing memories.
