Bentota and Beruwala
Bentota and Beruwela are separated by the Bentota River in the south west of Sri Lanka. Bentota is to the south and Beruwela to the north. The two towns are located 55 km south of Colombo and lie on the Indian Ocean coast.
Bentota is famous for it’s pristine beaches and earned a notable position in the Forbes Best Beaches in Asia Awards in 2010. This is even more impressive considering this was one of the beaches damaged by the 2004 tsunami. The area offers a whole host of watersports including water skiing, snorkelling, scuba diving, parasailing, fishing and surfing. So visitors will have loads to keep themselves occupied whilst visiting. Bentota is also famed for the famous jeweller Aida, the production of a Toddy (a coconut nectar based alcoholic beverage) and the world famous ancient art of healing called Ayurveda.
Beruwela has a lot of historical importance to the country. It was the first place in Sri Lanka that Muslims settled and is natutrally the home to the oldest mosque in Sri Lanka - the Kechimalai Mosque . Many of the Muslims still reside here and are gem merchants in the China Fort area. Beruwela also boasts 130km of white sandy beaches and numerous restaurants and bars.
