Days 1 - 3 Welcome to Russia! Airport arrival transfer and hotel check in. We enjoy guided tours of Moscow’s most famous sites - St. Basil’s Cathedral with its colourful turban shaped domes; Red Square, Kremlin, cathedrals and bell-tower. On day 3 we drive to Vladimir, founded by the prince of Kiev. We tour the impressive defensive fort built in 1108, and the Assumption Cathedral with frescoes by the greatest of old Russian painters Andrei Rubliov. Visits to beautiful, rural Suzdal. Exploring the town mostly on foot, we are enchanted by the wooden houses, medieval churches and the Assumption Refractory and prison, built on the order of Catherine II, a prison to house those who committed crimes against the church. Our stay is in the comfortable Pokrov convent hotel, known in Russian history as the place of exile of many Russian ladies of noble birth, including Peter the Great’s first wife, Evdokia. Guests’ dwellings are arranged in wooden homes within the walls of the convent.
Day 4 - 6 We tour the ‘cradle of the Romanov dynasty’, Kostroma and Yaroslavl, names after the Kievian prince, who set up a trading post here. Of interest are the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, founded in the 12th century and one of Russia’s richest and most fortified monasteries by the 1500’s. Days 6 is spent sightseeing lake side Rostov Veliky.
Day 7 Moscow - tour concludes after breakfast and onward departure transfer to the airport.
