A key part of the massive Russian railway system, the Trans - Siberian is the only overland route across the entire motherland. A real working railway carrying huge amounts of freight and passenger traffic, it's effectively the backbone of Russia and stakes claim to being the world's longest and the most famous train route connecting Moscow with the Far East. In addition, two Trans - Siberian routes connect Moscow with Beijing: the Trans - Mongolian, via Ulaan Baatar and the Gobi desert, and the Trans - Manchurian, via Harbin.
