Day 2: Istanbul

This morning we enjoy a guided tour of Istanbul's old city. Our tour includes visits to the stunning Blue Mosque famed for it’s blue Iznik tiles and unique 6 minarets, the ruinous Hippodrome – now a small park of sorts and once scene of chariot races and political activities in Byzantine times, Hagia Sofia Museum - constructed as a Basilica in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian, Topkapi Palace and the Underground Cistern – an ancient underground water tank - replete with carved and fluted Corinthian columns and a puzzling head of Medusa. Visitors walk on walkways suspended above the shallow water. It’s very cool and peaceful.

Day 3: Istanbul - Cappadocia

Transfer to the airport for a flight to Kayseri. We will drive to Cappadocia and visit Kaymakli Underground City, where dwellings for the christian communities were used as refuges. It contains all the usual rooms found in an underground city such as stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, churches, and wineries. Next stop is Pigeon Valley where you will see where the Pigeons were used to send messages and to fertilize the grapes. Wonderful panoromic views at Uchisar Castle - the highest point in the region. The castle and its surrounds used to be the most populated area in this settlement which resembles Ortahisar in style.

You will visit the churches, chapels and monasteries carved into the fairy chimneys from the 10th to the 13th centuries with fresgos painted on the walls. Then we will see Pasabaglar (Monks Valley). Many fairy chimneys with multiple stems and caps can be found here, this style being unique to this area. A chapel dedicated to St. Simeon and a hermit's shelter is built into one such fairy chimney with three heads.
