Welcome to Turkey and the start of your ANZAC experience! Choice of shuttle transfers to your hotel. Rest of the day free in Istanbul – a city that straddles both Europe and Asia! Tonight we have a welcome dinner at a nice restaurant in the old city.
This morning we enjoy a relaxing 2 hour cruise along the Bosphorus ‐ the strait that divides European from Asian Istanbul. Afterward we have a city tour taking in the Hippodrome area, the stunning Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, Topkapi Palace and the underground cistern. This afternoon offers free time to do as you please, maybe hone your bargaining skills at the Egyptian Spice market or famed Grand Bazaar – one of the largest covered markets in the world, boasting more than 4000 stores.
An early departure to the WW1 battlefields on Gallipoli Peninsular. This afternoon, enjoy a guided tour (subject to ANZAC Cove opening hours and traffic conditions) of the evocative war memorials that dot the region; Lone Pine, Chunuk Bair, Johnston’s Jolly, the trenches and Kabatepe ‐ the modest ANZAC museum. After our visit we drive to our hotel in Edremit - on the outskirts of Canakkale. Overnight Hotel - Adrina Hotel
Today we drive to Cape Helles. With a focus on the landings of 25th April 1915, we visit the British sector where the ‘River Clyde’ landed the men of the 29th Division on V Beach. We also visit Seddul Bair, the V Beach Cemetery and Turkish Gun Battery. Then the Lancashire Landing, where the First Lancashire Fusiliers won six VCs. This visit requires some walking as the roads to the beach are not accessible by vehicle. At X Beach we see the landing area of the 2nd Royal Fusiliers off HMS Implacable. After a picnic lunch, we explore the land fought for by the British in the 2nd phase of the campaign, seeing the Helles Memorial, the Vineyard and the war museum in Krithia. Early this evening, we’ll relax at our exclusive ANZAC Eve BBQ before taking our places at the dawn site.
First light heralds a poignant bugle call and commencement of the Dawn Service. After the service and armed with your maps, you have the chance to independently explore many of the trenches and memorial sites as you head up to Lone Pine or Chunuk Bair for the Australian or New Zealand National services. After breakfast we drive to legendary Troy; the site where the legendary Trojan War took place. We then cross the Mountain Ida and arrive into Pergamum visit Acropolis.
This morning we explore the Ancient City of Ephesus, where you will see some of the best preserved theatres, fountains and buildings in the world. A definite must while in Turkey! We then drive to Pamukkale and visit the travertines and the ancient city of Hierapolis which has the biggest Nekropol with 1200 gravestones in Anatolia. The sacred pool also is one of the highlights of the site.
Today drive straight to Istanbul and arrive in the late afternoon.
