Inhabited from the prehistoric ages, Ayvalik is a popular resort town with a beautiful bay area. It has two of the longest sandy beaches within Turkey, good diving and is well know for its olive oil production. It faces the Greek island of Lesbos and is surrounded by the cluster of Ayvalik islands.
The islands did not flourish for many ages due to the threat of piracy and the area eventually came under Ottoman rule in the 13th century. The town was under Greek rule for many years, building many Greek Orthodox churches which have now been converted into Muslim mosques, which occurred after Turkish War of Independence and the Exchange of Greek and Turkish Populations agreement in 1923.
Nearby, the Seytan Sofrasi (Devils Table), offers a stunning view of the archipelago along the Gulf of Ayvalik and the little Island of Alibey (Cunda), where there are pleasant seafood restaurants. With its cobbled streets, Old Greek houses, traditional crafts and fishing fleet, Ayvalik is a charming town to stay in.
