Canakkale is a great base for exploring Gallipoli and Troy and it sits on the Dardenelles, which join the Sea of Marmaris and the Aegean Sea. The pretty seafront of this modern town is well worth a visit, as is the Archaeological Museum and the Military and Naval Museum
Çanakkale has witnessed many civilizations, from the Aeolians to the Romans and is believed to have started around 3500-3600 B.C., with Troy. During the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1922, the Chanak Crisis involved a British and French force that was stationed at Cannakale, which the new Turkish Republic demanded to be removed. Eventually peace was negotiated.
Cannakale is the closest town to Troy, centre of the Trojan War and a flourishing town during the Bronze Age. Today the UNESCO World Heritage listed Troy is a large, ruinous site. The replica Trojan Horse used in the 2004 film Troy is in Morrabin Park in Canakkale.
Canakkale is the place from which to catch the ferry to the Turkish Aegean islands of Gokceada and Bozcaada, with beautiful beaches.
