For western music fans, South Korea may not automatically pop up on your radar when considering which music festivals to attend during the year. But whether you’re a music fan looking for something a little different or a weathered jazz aficionado, it’s definitely worth checking out the annual Jarasum Jazz Festival.
For music fans who haven’t heard of Jarasum, here’s a bit of background. Now in its 8th year, the festival is the biggest jazz festival in Asia, and one of the best-attended festivals in the world. Some of the names that have appeared in previous years include guitar legend John Scofield, drummer Dennis Chambers, guitar virtuoso Scott Henderson and bassist Victor Wooten. Along with stars like those, the festival does a lot to promote local artists, making it of huge interest to local and international fans alike.
From October 1st to October 3rd 2011, the 8th Jarasum International Jazz Festival will be taking place in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. Along with numerous local artists, the international highlights of the line-up this year include British swing crooner Duncan Galloway, rock-funk-latin-afro-jazz collective Mdungu (check out their video here), French guitarist Marc Ducret performing with the Marc Ducret Trio, legendary soul group Tower of Power and headliner and jazz legend Freddy Cole performing with the Freddy Cole Quartet.
With over 150 000 people attending every year, and a line-up that promises to impress, this is one of the premier events on the international festival calendar.
