Best places to visit in October

The timing of a holiday is key. There is nothing worse than arriving at your dream destination to a welcoming of torrential rain or freezing temperatures. This is the first of a 12 part series looking at the best places to visit when, ensuring you get the best out of your trip abroad.

October is an excellent time to dust off your hiking boots and go trekking in Nepal.

Nepal

With a rich history and a unique cultural heritage, a pilgrimage to Nepal should be on every traveller’s wish list. Not only does Nepal have ancient monasteries, beautiful temples, verdant national parks and quaint mountain villages, it also offers some of the best trekking in the world, with stunning scenery and magnificent mountain ranges (not to mention the world’s tallest mountain!). October marks the end of the monsoon season in Nepal making it the perfect time to dust off your hiking boots and head to the Himalayas. A dry climate, pleasant temperatures and brilliant visibility make for ideal trekking conditions. Whether you want to follow in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary with an adventurous trek to Everest Base Camp, or want an easy-paced trek through the Annapurna region, October is when to go.

China

A land of spectacular scenery, thriving cosmopolitan cities, and a rich cultural heritage, China is an intriguing mix of old and new. October is one of the best times to explore this fascinating country as autumn offers a warm and dry climate making it ideal for sightseeing. Climb the impressive Great Wall, marvel at the Terracotta Warriors of Xian, discover ancient temples and pagodas, and try some of China’s wonderful culinary treats while timing your visit to coincide with wonderful weather and the birthday of Confucius, one of China’s most influential philosophers and a praised national icon.

India

With a rich and varied history, a unique mixture of ethnic groups, exotic cuisine and an incredibly diverse landscape, India is an intoxicating cultural experience for any traveller. As such a vast country, the climatic conditions vary greatly throughout the country. Generally however India has a three seasons throughout the year: hot, wet and cool. The best time to visit is between October and February when the climate is its coolest and driest, making it ideal for taking in the Taj Mahal, cruising the backwaters of Kerala, or embarking on a rail journey across the country.

Bolivia

This South American gem is home to some of the world’s driest, saltiest and swampiest natural landscapes on earth, and a fascinating collection of unique rock formations. Add to this one of the largest indigenous populations in the continent, and you have a traveller’s paradise. Plus don’t forget La Paz, one of the world’s highest capital cities, and guaranteed to take your breath away. The clear, dry days of winter (May to October) offer the best time to explore Bolivia. During this time the country experiences clear blue skies and a pleasant climate.
