The fifth part in a twelve part series on the best places to visit each month. February is all about the palm-fringed beaches of Goa, the incredible phenomenon at Abu Simbel in Egypt, the world-famous Rio Carnival and the culture and customs of Laos.
February is a great time to visit Goa, especially for those who want to celebrate! From 9-12 February the Festival of Goa will see the streets of this southern Indian city come alive with colour, dancing and creative floats. Add to this a warm sunny climate, and you’ve got the perfect party. During this time Goa isn’t too hot but there is still plenty of beautiful sunshine to enjoy; plus its off season meaning you can enjoy the atmosphere without the tourist crowds, great for those who want a peaceful holiday while still being able to join the party at the crazy Festival of Goa.
Most people agree that Egypt is a brilliant year-round destination as the climate generally averages at a warm 26˚ throughout the year and is quite dry so you’ll be able to go out and explore its many ancient sites, from the Pyramids and mighty Sphinx, to the expansive Valley of the Kings. The Abu Simbel Sun Festival also happens in February (and October later in the year) on the 22nd of the month. On this day the sun’s rays shine into the inner sanctum of the temple of King Ramses II, attracting throngs of people every year to see this unusual phenomenon in all of its glory. Travel to Egypt in January and February 2014 and save 25% any of our tours when booked before the 31 of December this year.
One of the best-known festivals in the world is hosted in Rio De Janeiro every February. Held just before Lent, Carnival brings in thousands of people to the city and sees the streets awash with colour. These thousands that flock from all over the world build lavishly decorated floats to showcase in the parade, they wear colourful costumes and Samba to the beat of drums to celebrate at Carnival. Experiencing this exciting spectacle sould be on every travellers wish list, and with our Go Rio Carnival tour you can be right at the heart of the party – or bolt-on to Rio Carnival extension to any trip to Brazil.
February is one of the best times to visit Laos as the climate is warm and dry during the day and refreshingly cool come nightfall. Aside from the glorious weather, February also hosts a number of festivals around the country. Ever year thousands of people throng to the Elephant Festival to see the elephants lavishly decorated in bright colours as traders discuss their wares. Another festival, Makhaboucha falls on the third full moon of the lunar calender and is celebrated at the Wat temple with a candlelit procession. These events are great for those who wish to learn about Southeast Asian culture and get a deeper understanding of it.
Stay tuned next month for the best places to visit in March.
