Belize's southern coastal village of Placencia is more than just a top 100 beach destination - as anyone who has been there on group tours would agree.
It is also an adventure paradise, according to CNN, with its jaunty jungle rivers, wonderful wildlife and celebrated cultural sites such as its marvellous Mayan ruins.
Another plus is that this small traditional fishing settlement of around 1,300 people is a hidden gem, as the international tourism trade hasn't fully caught up with it yet.
One of the region's highlights is Laughing Bird Caye, a Belize National Park 11 miles off the Placencian coast.
This is a paradise for snorkellers and scuba divers, reaching barely a metre (3ft 3in) above sea level.
This protected isle is less than a hectare in size, but provides one of the most dazzling day trips off the Belize coast with its abundance of beautiful coral, birds and marine life.
An added bonus for UK holidaymakers is that Belize is the only country in the region where English is the official language.
