More than 200 diplomats from 81 countries gathered in Beijing on December 6 for the launch ceremony of the 2012 Silk Road Ski Festival in Urumqi.
The Silk Road Ski Festival, now in its 10th year, is the biggest winter tourism festival in western China.
Among the guests at the launch were officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, and the State Council's Information Office.
Members of the National Tourism Bureau and the Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, which is also celebrating its 10th anniversary, were also present at the ceremony.
The ski festival is held on an annual basis to promote ski tourism in Urumqi and is also used as an opportunity to promote Chinese culture in a bid to attract more visitors to the region.
This year, the launch in Beijing was hosted by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. The Tourism Bureau of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and the Urumqi Municipal Government also co-hosted the event.
