Boris Johnson gets royal treatment in India

26th Nov 2012

Boris Johnson has been flattered with a mistaken regal identity while touring India as some locals believed he was the King of England.

Other people confused him for his tennis lookalike Boris Becker while he visited the Akshardhan temple in Delhi, while one tourist from the USA was less complimentary and referred to the London Mayor as "that guy on the zip line", referring to an Olympics stunt which left Boris dangling on a rope in Victoria Park.

The official six-day trip, to promote business links with India, began with the presentation of a floral garland and a kanku - a customary red dot - being painted on the Mayor's forehead.

Following the visit to the temple, Boris enjoyed a log flume cruise while hearing about Indian history. He also watched a film about Hinduism, while his packed schedule nearly resulted in him being late for a round of business meetings.

The next stop was Delhi's India Gate, where locals and tourists had photos taken with Boris, inbetween live television interviews.

Rajeev Tyagi, a media photographer, said that apart from media professionals, most Indians had no idea who Boris Johnson was.
