Botswana a haven for racing fans

17th Aug 2012

Tourists to Botswana who enjoy the thrill of a race - whether on wheels or hooves - have been spoilt over the summer months with a number of events from the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO).

Tourism officials have recently held a number of motor racing and horse racing events but later this month the Khawa Dune Challenge and Cultural Festival will get under way in Kgalagadi District.

Over the weekend of August 24 and 25, the Khawa Sand Dunes encircling Khawa village will be transformed into the Brands Hatch of Botswana. The dunes will be the circuit for the Quad and Motorbike Challenge, which is open to everyone.

Festivities will start with a traditional song and dance on Friday, followed by the quad-biking and motorcycle races on Saturday. A camel race is also scheduled for the Saturday. Families are encouraged to attend the two-day event and campers are welcome.

This comes after Spin City held a motor racing event for those seeking their thrills from engines and acceleration.

But in Bobonong racers recently exchanged four wheels for four legs in the BTO horse race, and Gaborone was the starting line for a well-known cycling competition.
