Burma and Peru named top two countries

4th Feb 2013

Burma was awarded the honour of Top Country at The Wanderlust Readers' Travel Awards 2012, fresh on the back of its Top Emerging Destination success the previous year.

The Asian country won with 97% of the vote, seeing off competition from 182 other countries nominated by almost 3,000 readers.

Peru narrowly missed out on the win, finishing a close second, as Latin American and Asian countries dominated the awards.

New Zealand was placed third in the category, while the new Top Emerging Destination was exciting Latin hotspot Nicaragua.

Hoi An in Vietnam was elected the Top City to visit, Singapore Airlines was named Top Airline, and Singapore Changi was awarded Top Worldwide Airport, a category it retained.

The awards are based on the actual trips taken by some of the UK's most active travellers, with the winners decided using a percentage-satisfaction scoring system rather than just number of votes cast.

Elsewhere, Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel took home the title of Top Guidebook Series, while Rohan received the award for Top Travel Equipment Brand.
